The University of Alaska is a state public higher education system based in Fairbanks, Alaska. Its origins lie in the Alaska Agricultural College and School of Mines, and it was renamed the University of Alaska in 1935. The system encompasses three major campuses—University of Alaska Fairbanks, University of Alaska Anchorage, and University of Alaska Southeast—along with Prince William Sound Community College in Valdez, each independently accredited. Across the system, nearly 33,000 students are enrolled in more than 500 degree, certificate or endorsement programs spanning the sciences, engineering, education, business, the arts and humanities, and other fields.

Governance is provided by an 11-member board of regents under the Alaska Constitution, with a system president acting as chief executive and chancellors for UAA, UAF, and UAS reporting to the president. In May 2026, the University of Alaska Board of Regents appointed Matt Cooper as the university president after a private hiring process.
