The University of North Carolina System is a public, multi-campus higher education system serving the state through teaching, research, scholarship, outreach, and service. It comprises 16 university campuses across North Carolina and the NC School of Science and Mathematics, the country’s first public, residential high school for gifted students, with more than 225,000 students enrolled. The System Office is based in Raleigh and houses the president and senior administrative staff, providing systemwide leadership in areas such as academic affairs, business and financial management, communications, strategy and policy, human resources, legal affairs, and government relations, while also overseeing several university affiliates. It maintains affiliated entities that deliver social and economic benefits for citizens, including the UNC Center for Public Television, the UNC Health Care System, and the NC Arboretum. In 2026, the Board of Governors elected Kellie Hunt Blue as its chair, effective July 1, 2026, reflecting ongoing leadership changes within the system.
