The University of Salerno is a research services institution located in Fisciano, Campania, Italy, with between 1,001 and 5,000 employees. It traces its origins to one of Europe\'s oldest universities, with the 8th-century Salerno School of Medicine historically a major center in European medical science. The university was closed in 1811 by royal decree during Murat\'s Napoleonic government and reopened in 1944; the Istituto Universitario di Magistero "Giovanni Cuomo" was founded and later became the state-controlled Facoltà di Magistero in 1968. In 1988 the university relocated to the village of Fisciano in the Irno valley; the campus features modern facilities that support teaching, research and student life, including a modern library, multimedia facilities and green spaces. It is among the largest universities in southern Italy and continues to grow, with recent initiatives such as launching a series of scholarships for UNIMED-associated universities.
