The University of Tennessee is a public land-grant research university headquartered in Knoxville, Tennessee, and serves as the flagship institution of the statewide University of Tennessee system. Founded in 1794, it comprises nine undergraduate departments and eleven graduate departments and enrolls more than 26,000 students from all 50 states and more than 100 countries. Its research ecosystem is strengthened by ties to Oak Ridge National Laboratory and the UT-Battelle partnership, positioning UT Knoxville as a co-manager with substantial opportunities for faculty and students. The university is affiliated with centers and facilities such as the Howard H. Baker, Jr. Center for Public Policy, the University of Tennessee Anthropological Research Facility, and the Oak Ridge Arboretum, a 250-acre site near Oak Ridge with diverse regional plant species. In June 2026, UT Knoxville announced plans to construct a 100,000-square-foot quantum research facility to establish a regional quantum hub in Knoxville.
