The U.S. Department of the Treasury is a large federal agency in the Government Administration sector, headquartered in Washington, District of Columbia. It is charged with promoting economic prosperity and ensuring the financial security of the United States, providing guidance to the President on economic and financial matters and supporting sustainable growth and governance improvements in financial institutions. It operates and maintains systems that undergird the nation’s financial infrastructure, including currency production, public disbursements, revenue collection, and borrowing to fund the federal government. It collaborates with other federal agencies, foreign governments, and international financial institutions to promote global economic growth and to help anticipate and prevent financial crises, while also supporting national security through sanctions and by targeting financial networks that fund threats. In November 2025 the department launched a broad audit program across its bureaus to review contracts and related work.
