Vancouver Island University is a public higher education institution based in Nanaimo, British Columbia, serving Vancouver Island and the coastal region. Established in 1936, it has evolved to provide a range of programs that expand access to university education for the local community. It emphasizes personal connection, kindness, and diversity of thought and experience, with success measured by community strength and student achievement.

In response to regional needs, VIU launched an education delivery model to address teacher shortages in rural and remote areas of British Columbia. The university has extended student support through partnerships such as Studiosity, offering around-the-clock online tutoring in core subjects. Recent governance changes include the appointment of Sharon Torgerson as Chair of the Board in 2026, reflecting ongoing leadership updates.
