Southside Virginia Community College operates as a public, two-year institution within the Virginia Community College System, an umbrella created by the 1966 Virginia General Assembly. It serves the Southside region, with the Christanna Campus located near Alberta, Virginia, and exists to provide accessible higher education through a regional network. As a regional higher education provider, it supports learning opportunities and workforce development for residents and local employers. 

In recent years the college has pursued partnerships, including a collaboration with Microsoft to pilot a veterans training pathway led by the SVCC Foundation. These efforts reflect ongoing capacity-building within the system to strengthen programs and serve the needs of students and the surrounding economy.
