Virginia Intermont College is a prestigious, private liberal arts-based college that offers students excellent academic and pre-professional programs in a personal, community setting. Founded in 1884 by Baptist minister Reverend J.R. Harrison who wanted to establish a school for the higher education of women, VI quickly became one of the South’s prestigious institutions for the education of women, establishing a tradition of liberal arts-based career preparation that, to this day, remains a hallmark of the college. VI’s goal centers on the individual. Rev. Harrison wanted to make it possible for women “to earn their own livelihood and to become independent, decision-making individuals.” The college maintains that aim for today’s coeducational student body through its mission to “create an environment for learning in which each student, according to his or her unique pattern of interests, abilities, ambitions, plans and talents, may find opportunities for intellectual and spiritual growth, aesthetic experience, social development and physical improvement.” Virginia Intermont College is a vibrant institution with a proud history and an exciting future. A longtime leader in private, higher education, VI commits to maintaining its tradition of excellence in collegiate life.
