VJAA was founded in 1995. The firm combines research with design to make their practice more reflexive and adaptable to a wide range of problems, locations, and technologies.  VJAA is the recipient of the 2012 American Institute of Architects Firm Award, the most prestigious award given by the AIA to an American architectural firm. Services include comprehensive architectural design, master planning and feasibility studies, adaptive reuse, historic renovation and preservation. Since its founding more than twenty years ago, the firm has worked with a diverse clientele in the U.S. and abroad, including public and private institutions, developers, and individual clients.

The firm is the recipient of the Award in Architecture from the American Academy of Arts and Letters and their work has been published in Architect Magazine, Architectural Record, Architecture Review (UK), A+U (Japan), The New York Times, Perspecta, Praxis, and in a number of books in the U.S. and in France, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain, the U.K., India, China, and South America. The work of VJAA is also the subject of a monograph published by Princeton Architectural Press.  

The firm is led by Jennifer Yoos FAIA (CEO), Vincent James FAIA (CFO) and Nathan Knutson AIA (Managing Principal).  Current work includes the Minnesota Museum of American Art in St. Paul; the Ashrafieh Event Center in Beirut; and residential projects in Chicago and Telluride.  Recently completed projects include the Upper Lobby Redesign and the new African Art Galleries in Kenzo Tange’s Minneapolis Institute of Arts (1978); and the Welland International Flatwater Center for the Toronto 2015 Pan Am Games.
