The term "attorney" derives from the Anglo-Saxon 'atorne', i.e. "appointed one"; because the atorne was a public servant appointed to speak on behalf of a citizen. While the citizen was fully familiar with the facts of the subject case it was left for the atorne to fashion an argument on behalf of the citizen that conformed to the applicable law. In this regard the role of the attorney has always been one of civil service, an advocate for the people.
