The company aims to align consumer interest in renewable distributed power generation with informed decision-making in electricity plans, drawing on founders' backgrounds in energy trading and risk management. Volt EP was launched in 2013 in Cypress, Texas, reflecting a focus on transparency and enabling informed choices for customers.

The organization is based in the Houston area and maintains a small team. Its target customers include early adopters of new technologies and individuals who seek environmentally conscious electricity choices, within a market that is experiencing disruption from distributed power generation. Within the industry, Volt positions itself as a transparent retailer of electricity in a deregulated, evolving market.
