Waterkeeper Alliance is a nonprofit that coordinates a global network of Waterkeeper Organizations and Affiliates devoted to protecting rivers, lakes, and coastal waterways. The movement began in 1966 when blue-collar fishermen on New York’s Hudson River sparked grassroots environmental activism that helped the river recover and inspired others to form local Waterkeeper groups. Together, the network covers more than 2.5 million square miles on six continents and defends the human right to drinkable, fishable, and swimmable waters. Waterkeepers work on the water to track polluters, in courtrooms to enforce environmental laws, and in communities to advocate and educate. The organization is headquartered in New York, New York, and aims to connect local water issues with a coordinated global movement. In March 2026, Sharif Jamil was appointed as the Asia regional representative, reflecting ongoing regional expansion.
