Waterkeepers Chesapeake is a coalition of local Waterkeeper programs focused on protecting and restoring the waters of the Chesapeake and Coastal Bays to make them swimmable and fishable. It strengthens the capacity and voice of its member organizations, coordinating efforts to combat pollution and advance clean-water goals. Members engage at the local level through grassroots action and advocacy to safeguard communities and their waterways. Regionally, the coalition pools resources and aligns the strengths of its members to expand on-the-water, citizen-based enforcement of environmental laws across the Chesapeake region. Based in Takoma Park, Maryland, the organization operates as a small nonprofit within the civic and social sector. In June 2026, Waterkeepers Chesapeake appointed Matt Henjum as Director, marking a leadership transition for the coalition.
