Wesco’s Story After returning home from World War II, Bud Westgate, looking for a career path, saw an opportunity in the gas station business. He purchased property on Whitehall Road, across the street from our current headquarters. Building a cinder block building and installing two pumps, Wesco opened its doors for business in 1952. In the seventies, sons Jim and Jerry joined the Company and took on the role of Co-Presidents. During the ‘80s and ’90s, Wesco more than doubled with two large acquisitions. Throughout the 2000s, Wesco instilled a renewed focus on the company’s overall culture, taking care of our associates, providing excellent customer service, and helping to improve the lives of others, which has led to excellent associate growth. Jim retired in 2011. Jerry remains active at Wesco as the Chairman of the Board, while siblings Nancy Westgate-Sytsema and JJ Westgate share the role of Co-President, and have divided management responsibilities. 2022 will mark the 70th anniversary of Wesco’s founding. Business Overview Today, 55 Wesco Convenience Stores are spread throughout Michigan, open 24/7/365. Wesco also owns and operates a private distribution center, a bulk fuel and propane business, a private label deli and bakery operation, and 6 Subway locations. Wesco has focused on meeting the customers’ needs from our earliest days, and our commitment to customer service continues today. Wesco’s Mission Statement and Unifying Principles are a core component of Wesco, and all of our associates work to bring those to life day after day. Growth Plans By the end of 2022, construction will be completed on our 60,000 sq ft addition to our Central Campus. This addition will house our distribution center, bakery, and commissary. The state-of-art facility will bring all of our business units into one unified campus, allowing the sharing of resources and heightened efficiencies.
