Distilleries produce spirit, put it into cask and lay it down to rest to go through the maturation period (3 - 30+ yrs). This means that distilleries generate zero revenue whilst the casks are under maturation. Historically, distilleries would look to the banks to finance this period and help them manage cash flow throughout the storage period, however, since the 2008 Credit crunch the banks have steered away from funding this period. This created an opportunity for private investors to purchase the new make spirit, hold it whilst it matures in a government bonded warehouse and then sell it at a nice profit.
