WIKISPEED is a Seattle-based, volunteer-driven automotive prototyping organization focused on developing safe, low-cost, ultra-efficient, mass-production road-legal vehicles. Led by founder and CEO Joe Justice, the team operates remotely with participants from around the world, pursuing rapid, modular design processes that allow improvements to be incorporated quickly. The company emerged in 2006 to engage in the Progressive Insurance Automotive X Prize challenge, producing the SGT-01 vehicle in a short period and achieving a top-10 finish among international entrants. Its work is oriented toward changing perceptions of car manufacturing and ownership by delivering 100 mpg+ cars with total cost of ownership comparable to existing economy cars. WIKISPEED positions itself within the motor vehicle manufacturing sector as a collaborative, prototype-focused organization that emphasizes green automotive concepts and scalable, modular development.
