The Air Line Pilots Association, Int'l (ALPA) is the largest union representing airline pilots, with more than 80,000 pilots across 42 U.S. and Canadian airlines. Based in Tysons, Virginia, it operates in the airlines and aviation sector and employs a workforce of several hundred. Founded in 1931, ALPA is chartered by the AFL-CIO in the United States and by the Canadian Labour Congress, and it is known internationally as US-ALPA; it is also a member of the International Federation of Air Line Pilot Associations (IFALPA). The organization represents pilots in labor matters and collaborates with industry stakeholders to support aviation operations. In 2026, ALPA Canada joined with the Canadian Air Traffic Control Association to publish a white paper outlining a future path for Canadian aviation and highlighting the sector's role in serving remote communities and facilitating economic activity. Historically, the association has engaged in industry partnerships, including a 2011 initiative with Airlines for America to launch the Known Crewmember program to expedite crew movement from curb to gate.
