The American Chemical Society (ACS) is a congressionally chartered, independent membership organization serving professionals across the chemical sciences. Founded in 1876 and based in Washington, DC, it is one of the world’s largest scientific societies and a large nonprofit with a global community of more than 200,000 members, including chemists, chemical engineers, and related professionals. As a leading scientific society, ACS publishes journals and databases, convenes major research conferences, and runs educational programs, science policy engagement, and career resources to advance scientific knowledge, empower a global community, and uphold scientific integrity. ACS supports research through annual grantmaking of over $22 million for petroleum and related fields. It also leads efforts to educate policymakers and the public about the importance of chemistry in everyday life. In June 2026, the Publications Division launched the ACS Publishing Center, a unified manuscript submission platform across all ACS journals.
