The American College of Surgeons is a non-profit organization focused on improving surgical patient care and safeguarding care standards, a mission refined over more than a century. Based in Chicago, Illinois, it counts more than 90,000 members worldwide and partners with about 2,500 hospitals in quality programs, while tracking upwards of 50 million patient records through surgical registries. It serves surgeons at all career stages—from Fellows (FACS) to residents and medical students—within a broad House of Surgery, and offers education and quality-improvement programs intended to expand access, reduce complications, and improve outcomes. The ACS provides quality accreditation, guidelines, and tools across trauma, cancer, breast disease, bariatrics, children's surgery, geriatric, and general surgical care. A notable recent development is the 2026 introduction of a Workplace Standards framework to guide the surgical work environment.
