American Tool Company is a small- to mid-sized machine shop that produces custom, precision-machined parts for industrial equipment. Founded in 1918 by David Schafer, the company began by machining for local tool-and-die shops and later supplied components for hydraulic presses and wartime machinery. It relocated to its current facility in Lincoln, Rhode Island, in 1963, maintaining a focus on capital equipment applications. In 1985, ownership passed to the McCally family, who shifted the business toward more complex parts for capital equipment and developed a close relationship with Dynamic Converting Systems, which designs and builds large presses. All of Dynamic Converting Systems' main components are manufactured at American Tool, underscoring its role as a contract manufacturer for high-tonnage press applications; a 2021 development noted the retirement of a long-serving quality control manager.
