The Animal Legal Defense Fund is a national nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing animal protection through the legal system. Established in 1979 by attorneys who helped shape the field of animal law, it works to strengthen anti-cruelty enforcement and promote more humane treatment of animals in everyday life. The organization pursues its mission through high-impact lawsuits, free legal assistance and training for prosecutors, and efforts to support and challenge relevant legislation as needed. It serves prosecutors, law students and legal professionals, as well as policymakers and advocates, by providing resources, education, and opportunities to advance the developing field of animal law. Based in Washington, D.C., the organization operates across the United States. In May 2026, ALDF filed suit in Texas against Buck N' Bull Meatworx LLC and its owner for alleged violations of the state's Cruelty to Livestock statute.
