Bankia is a Spanish banking entity fully owned by Banco Financiero y de Ahorros, created through the 2010 consolidation of seven cajas. It formed from Caja Madrid, Bancaja, and several regional cajas, with Caja Madrid and Bancaja constituting the largest shares in the group. Bankia is positioned as the leading bank in Spain by domestic business, supported by assets of about €272 billion and tangible equity of €12 billion. The bank began operations on January 1, 2011, after its creation on December 3, 2010, following a four-month integration period. Its activities span retail banking, corporate banking, corporate finance, capital markets, asset management, and private banking, backed by a broad national network that is a leader in six autonomous communities. The organization is based in Madrid, at 189 Paseo de la Castellana, in the Community of Madrid.
