Botswana Telecommunications Corporation (BTC) is a state-owned telecommunications operator in Botswana, established in 1980 to provide and manage the country’s national and international communications services. The Botswana government holds 100% equity in the company. In 1996, the BTC Act liberalized the market by ending BTC’s monopoly and introducing indirect competition through two cellular joint ventures, Mascom Wireless and Vista Communications (now Orange); the act also created a regulatory framework that encouraged competition in customer premises equipment and value-added services. Recent developments include modernization efforts such as a 2025 agreement with Amdocs to upgrade BTC’s convergent charging and billing platform. The year also saw leadership changes, with Thato Kewakae named interim board chair in September 2025 and Jurgen Peschel appointed as CEO in June 2025. BTC participates in industry events in Botswana, including World Telecommunication and Information Society Day, and undertakes related activity within the sector.
