Jon Bockman didn't inherit a finished business. He inherited a work ethic and a reputation to live up to.
His father Charlie opened what would become Bockman's as a gas station in DeKalb County back in 1964. Jon grew up around it, doing whatever needed doing -- painting curbs, changing oil, stocking machines -- and worked his way through every role the shop had before moving into management. He bought the business from his father on July 1, 1999.
What followed was 25-plus years of steady growth. Jon moved the Sycamore location to its current home at 2158 Oakland Dr. in 2010, eventually expanding to fill the entire building and buying it outright in 2018. In 2019, he added a second location at 112 Industrial Dr. in DeKalb, a full-service commercial and fleet center that handles everything from diesel engines and trucks up to Class 7 to trailers, RVs, and campers, and is DeKalb County's only IDOT Safety Lane.
In 2024, to mark the business's 60th anniversary, Jon unified both locations under one name, Bockman's Auto, Truck & Tire, one website, and one brand.
Today, Bockman's has 24 employees across two locations and has been named NAPA Auto Care Shop of the Year, chosen from more than 18,000 centers nationwide. The shop has also won Best Auto Repair in the Daily Chronicle Readers' Choice 15 times.
Jon still shows up every day with the same mindset he had when he was the kid fixing tires: take care of people, do the work right, and treat every customer like a neighbor.
