For nearly a century and a half, Bournewood Health Systems has been a steady presence in New England’s behavioral-health landscape. Our Brookline-based hospital started in 1884 with a single purpose—offering compassionate psychiatric care at a time when empathy was rare—and that purpose still guides us. Today, we provide a full continuum of evidence-based services that meet people where they are and help them move forward with dignity and hope. Inpatient Hospitalization When a crisis requires 24/7 support, our 102-bed inpatient units for adults and adolescents deliver round-the-clock medical and therapeutic care in a safe, structured setting. Multidisciplinary teams—psychiatrists, nurses, social workers, and expressive therapists—create individualized care plans that focus on stabilization, medication management, and skill-building so patients can safely transition to the next level of care. Partial Hospitalization Programs (PHPs) Sometimes people need intensive treatment without an overnight stay. Our PHPs offer six hours of care, five days a week, blending group therapy, individual sessions, family meetings, and psychiatric oversight. Patients practice coping strategies during the day and return home each evening, allowing them to apply new skills in real time. We run separate programs for adults and adolescents, ensuring developmental and clinical needs are met. Kaleidoscope: LGBTQIA+ & Gender-Expansive PHP Inclusive care isn’t an add-on at Bournewood—it’s built in. Kaleidoscope serves LGBTQIA+ and gender-expansive adolescents who need an affirming space that understands the intersection of identity and mental health. Led by clinicians with deep expertise in gender-affirming practice, the program blends cognitive-behavioral, dialectical, and expressive therapies with peer support, helping young people find community and confidence while navigating anxiety, depression, trauma, and self-harm.
