Founded in 1865, it is the oldest historically Black college or university in Maryland and one of the oldest in the country, serving a diverse community of about 6,100 students, as well as faculty and staff. The university offers 23 undergraduate majors and 35 master's, doctoral, and advanced certificate programs, and it participates in the University System of Maryland to provide accessible and affordable education. Its campus blends a tranquil setting with proximity to the Washington, DC, and Baltimore metropolitan area, supporting undergraduate life around the clock in seven residence halls while also offering evening and online courses for working students. In May 2026, Bowie State announced a fast-track admissions partnership with Prince George's County Public Schools to streamline enrollment pathways for local students.
