Civil Air Patrol is a non-profit organization established in 1941 that acts as the official auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force, operating within its Total Force framework. Based at Maxwell Air Force Base in Alabama, CAP maintains a substantial aviation program with 555 single-engine aircraft and 2,250 small unmanned aircraft systems. It conducts about 90% of search and rescue operations in the contiguous United States under the direction of the Air Force Rescue Coordination Center and was credited by AFRCC with saving 108 lives last year, aided by cellphone forensics and radar analysis. In addition to rescue missions, CAP undertakes homeland security, disaster relief, and drug interdiction tasks at the request of federal, state, and local agencies. The organization emphasizes aerospace education through STEM resources aligned with national standards and operates Cadet Programs that mentor tens of thousands of young people. CAP's membership totals around 56,000, reflecting its broad volunteer base; in early 2026 it announced an expansion of its offices to Cherry Capital in Traverse City, Michigan.
