DTIC serves as the Department of Defense’s official central repository for scientific and technical information, linking research outcomes to the Warfighter and supporting defense advancements over more than eight decades. It manages and disseminates the DoD’s substantial annual investment in science and technology, coordinating access to critical knowledge across the defense community. It provides a secure, comprehensive platform used by roughly 70,000 defense researchers as well as Federally Funded Research Centers and University Affiliated Research Centers to access, share, and build upon important knowledge, preserving past gains while enabling future breakthroughs.

Based in Fort Belvoir, Virginia, the organization operates as a mid-sized player in the information services sector serving the defense science and technology ecosystem. A September 2025 development notes collaboration with the U.S. Marine Corps and other DoD partners to finalize a contract with Palantir Technologies for an enterprise license related to the Maven Smart System, reflecting ongoing public‑private cooperation in data‑driven command and control.
