EMEC is a testing facility established in 2003 that focuses on demonstrating and evaluating wave and tidal energy converters in the sea. It operates as an accredited test laboratory (ISO/IEC 17025) and inspection body (ISO/IEC 17020), offering purpose-built, open-sea testing environments where prototype marine energy technologies can be assessed in challenging conditions while staying near sheltered waters. To date, more ocean energy converters have been tested at EMEC than at any other site. Based in Stromness, Scotland, EMEC has broadened its activities to support a green hydrogen economy in Orkney, including an onshore production plant adjacent to the Fall of Warness substation. In addition to ocean energy, EMEC is pursuing projects in floating offshore wind, hydrogen, e-fuels and other clean-energy initiatives to aid island decarbonisation.
