ERCOT is the independent system operator for Texas, overseeing the flow of electric power to about 27 million customers and representing roughly 90% of the state's electric load. It manages a grid that includes more than 54,100 miles of transmission lines and more than 1,250 generation units, including private use networks. In addition to grid management, ERCOT conducts financial settlements for the competitive wholesale bulk-power market and administers retail switching in competitive choice areas. The organization is a membership-based 501(c)(4) nonprofit governed by a board and overseen by the Public Utility Commission of Texas and the Texas Legislature. Based in Taylor, Texas, ERCOT serves a diverse membership of consumers, cooperatives, generators, marketers, retail electric providers, investor-owned utilities, municipal utilities, and other market participants, and it employs between 1,001 and 5,000 people.
