The Eugene O'Neill Theater Center is a nonprofit organization in the performing arts, based in Waterford, Connecticut. Founded in 1964 by George C. White and named after America’s Nobel Prize–winning playwright, the center operates six programs: the O'Neill Playwrights Conference, Music Theater Conference, Puppetry Conference, National Theater Institute, Critics Institute, and it also preserves the Monte Cristo Cottage, O'Neill's childhood home in nearby New London, as part of its educational footprint. The center emphasizes the script as the starting point for performance, presenting work in development with minimal props and no sets or costumes to reveal a new play or musical in its early form. It engages a wide range of participants—including students and professionals such as writers, directors, puppeteers, and performers—helping them refine material and explore its theatrical potential. Over the years, the organization has supported hundreds of works that have moved on to regional theaters, Broadway, film, or television, and its staff and alumni have earned major awards in the theater arts.
