The Federal Court of Australia is a federal superior court established by the Federal Court of Australia Act 1976, with operations beginning on 1 February 1977. It consolidated and extended federal jurisdiction previously exercised by parts of the High Court and entirely by the Australian Industrial Court and the Federal Court of Bankruptcy. As a court of law and equity and a court of record, it handles a range of federal matters and issues binding decisions. Based in Melbourne, Victoria, it serves a nationwide audience with proceedings held in capital cities and other locations as needed, and it employs hundreds of staff. In December 2025, the court announced the Australia Pacific Judicial Partnership program, a collaboration with Pacific Island nations to support regional judicial administration. This development reflects the court’s ongoing role within Australia’s federal justice system and its engagement beyond national borders.
