Hanover County Public Schools is a public K through 12 education district based in Ashland, Virginia. It oversees 24 schools: 14 elementary, four middle, and four high schools, with additional facilities for trade and technology and for alternative education, and it serves about 17,000 students from pre kindergartens through 12th grade. The district is among Virginia's larger divisions, ranking 15th in size among the state's 131 school divisions, and ten of its schools have earned the Blue Ribbon School of Excellence designation. In March 2026, HCPS reported a cybersecurity incident that disrupted its network, with an unauthorized actor attempting to deploy ransomware, and in January 2025 it disclosed a data breach connected to its student information system vendor, PowerSchool. These incidents illustrate the security risks facing large Kโ12 districts that rely on external platforms.
