History of Hawaiian Island Solar... Gary Ralston, owner and operator, grew up in Hawaii beginning school at Waimanalo Elementary in 1960. He began working with solar water systems in 1981 after spending time in Guam working at Pacific Aeration, Inc., a sewage treatment contractor that was owned by his father. The company utilized a natural type of aeration in which bacteria eats the waste rather than using chemicals to clean the water. "It brought a lot of awareness to me about the environment and made me realize that I could make a difference in Hawaii." After leaving Solar Service and Installation, a local contractor from the late 70's where he had moved up to manage residential installations and services, Gary Ralston started Hawaiian Island Solar in the March of 1983.
