It was founded in 1975 by Monsignor Ignatius McDermott and Dr. James West to treat addiction as a disease and to provide services to underserved populations regardless of ability to pay. In recent years, Haymarket Center has expanded facilities and partnerships, including a 2022 West Loop medical center expansion and collaborations with UI Health to connect hospital patients with community-based treatment.
