Iarnród Éireann Irish Rail is Ireland’s national rail operator and infrastructure manager, overseeing the core passenger and freight networks and serving as the Port Authority for Rosslare Europort. Established on 2 February 1987 as a subsidiary of Córas Iompair Éireann, it operates internal Intercity, DART and Commuter services as well as freight trains, and it works with Translink to run the Enterprise service between Dublin and Belfast. Based in Dublin 1, Leinster, the organization plays a central role in the country’s rail transportation system. Its customers include daily rail passengers across intercity, DART and commuter services as well as freight customers relying on the national network. In May 2026 reports noted expansion of facilities and a land access agreement with the ESB to develop a new Cortober facility, indicating ongoing infrastructure development.
