The Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES) is a policy-oriented research organization focused on developing innovative instruments to advance sustainable development and decarbonisation. Based in Kamiyamaguchi, Kanagawa, Japan, IGES conducts strategic studies and information-sharing activities in collaboration with governments, international organizations, research institutions, businesses, and local communities, with a particular emphasis on the Asia-Pacific region. The institute operates from multiple offices in Asia and Japan, supporting diverse teams that cover climate and energy, natural resources and ecosystem services, sustainable consumption and production, and green finance and business, all aimed at shaping policy decisions and practical solutions.
IGES was established in 1998 through a Japanese government initiative and a local prefectural support framework, initially as a foundation and later transitioning to a public interest foundation in 2012. It pursues its mission by conducting strategy-oriented research, hosting international conferences, providing information, and offering training programs for a wide range of stakeholders, including government entities, international bodies, municipalities, researchers, and civil society. A notable recent development is the partnership-based expansion of its regional initiatives, such as the launch of Phase II of a project addressing marine plastic debris in Asia." } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } }
