C'est en août 1944, avec des moyens de fortune que le premier numéro du "Provençal" composé d'une seule feuille est imprimé. Septembre 1944, trois semaines après la première édition du Provençal, le Méridional sort également son premier numéro. C'est en février 1971 que les deux journaux signent un accord. il y a un rapprochement entre les deux titres: les rédactions qui gardent leur indépendance, partagent l'impression. Mais pour faire face aux problèmes auxquels sont confrontés les journaux de la PQR, le Provençal et le Méridional aillient leur force.Cette fusion donne naissance à La Provence, le 4 juin 1997. 2007 sera l'année du changement. En janvier, La Provence se dote de deux nouvelles rotatives de la toute dernière génération. Un outil industriel high-tech qui lui permet de passer au format Berlinois. Cette même année, elle lance son site Internet et le 20 décembre le Groupe Hersant Média devient propriétaire du groupe La Provence.
