The Long Island Community Foundation is a nonprofit, charitable organization that connects donors with the full spectrum of charitable organizations within our community. In 1978, The New York Community Trust, one of the nation's oldest and largest community foundations, established a Long Island division to provide Nassau and Suffolk County residents with an economical alternative to a private foundation or a commercial gift fund. Since then, we have granted nearly $160 million to nonprofit organizations across the country from hundreds of funds established by individuals, families, and businesses. We identify current and future community needs, strengthen the Island’s nonprofit sector, encourage philanthropy, and, with our generous donors, build a permanent endowment to address these needs. We provide personalized and responsible philanthropic advisory services and financial stewardship to make giving meaningful, effective and easy for our donors. What makes us unique is our expertise and thorough research of local issues as well as the nonprofit organizations effectively addressing these issues. We survey community, business, and government leaders, diligently reviewing our grantmaking priorities as we continually strive to achieve the greatest impact in our communities. Our comprehensive review of nonprofit organization’s governance and finances ensures that they meet best practice standards for charities, which serves as a layer of protection for our donors. Our ultimate goal is to provide the stewardship that donors deserve and to ensure that their assets are invested and distributed wisely, whether to the arts, education, health, human services, or the environment. Simply put, we want to ensure that our donors feel good about giving back!
