Luster Learning Institute NFP is a not-for-profit organization, founded in 2007. It's mission is to inspire students, parents and school communities to be kind, peaceful, respectful and responsible. The organization accomplishes this through its "Calm Classroom" program.

In preschool-12th grade, Calm Classroom creates a school-wide culture that cultivates the habit of practicing techniques that increase emotional self-regulation, attention span, and absorption of academic content, while decreasing stress and behavior management challenges. 

The program develops self-awareness, mental focus and inner calm within students and teachers. Within each individual, Calm Classroom develops attitudes of respect and non-violence toward themselves and others, and fosters the tenacity and optimism that is required to face and successfully master challenging situations that occur in and beyond school.

The Calm Classroom program is composed of a research-based curriculum, a school-wide professional development program, and long-term support services. Since 2008, Calm Classroom has been implemented in over 150 preschool through high school public, charter and private schools. As of 2014, the program has reached 85,000 Chicago Public School students and their families, 4,500 teachers/school staff, and 1,200 administrators.

Students, teachers, administrators and school support staff are trained in facilitating and utilizing focusing, breathing, stretching and relaxation techniques that are practiced for 30 seconds to three minutes during normal school transitions. Teachers facilitate these practices 2-3 times each day in the classrooms. School counseling and disciplinary staff include the techniques as part of their counseling sessions with students.

Calm Classroom develops the internal skills and habits that prepare students to build a more peaceful and brighter future for themselves, their families and our society.
