The Maine Turnpike Authority is an independent state agency created by the Maine Legislature in 1941 to construct and maintain a toll-funded highway that serves as a backbone of Maine’s economy. It operates the 109-mile Maine Turnpike, a network that includes multi-lane sections, bridges and interchanges, toll plazas, maintenance facilities, service plazas, and an administration and public safety building. The highway handles a substantial volume of traffic, averaging 199,000 vehicle transactions per day (72.6 million in 2009). It is based in Portland, Maine. Its customers are motorists and freight operators who rely on the toll road for movement and commerce, with user fees funding ongoing maintenance and safety operations. In 2024, the authority appointed an interim executive director following the departure of its previous head.
