The instrument can be used vertically, horizontally, or in an arc, to measure lateral deformation, settlement, or convergence. ShapeArray’s design—rigid stainless steel sensorized segments connected by flexible joints—is durable and allows for simple installation from its shipping reel. Every segment of ShapeArray contains three MEMS tilt sensors, a microprocessor and digital temperature sensor. ShapeArray has changed the way geotechnical instrumentation is expected to perform. Prior to ShapeArray, specialized technicians needed to take lengthy readings in the field before taking the data in for analysis. With ShapeArray, data can be collected and transmitted in real-time. By producing accurate data in real-time, the instrument has closed the gap between engineering theory and observable phenomena in the field. The data provides project engineers and designers with better information to make smarter decisions that increase public safety and save money.
