Nashville Electric Service (NES) is a public electric utility based in Nashville, Tennessee, and ranks among the 11 largest public electric utilities in the United States. It distributes electricity to more than 430,000 customers across about 700 square miles in Middle Tennessee. The organization does not operate its own generating capacity; it purchases power from the Tennessee Valley Authority. Founded in 1939, NES aims to provide safe, reliable and affordable power. NES is governed by a five-member board appointed by the mayor and confirmed by the Metro Council, with five-year terms and no compensation. In March 2026, NES announced enhancements to its power outage online tool intended to improve customer access and clarity of information.
