Founded in 1959 and based in Alexandria, Virginia, the National Association of State Mental Health Program Directors (NASMHPD) is a national membership organization in the mental health care sector. It represents the public mental health service delivery system across all states, territories, Pacific Jurisdictions, and the District of Columbia, and is the only national association that represents state mental health commissioners/directors and their agencies. NASMHPD comprises eight divisions led by directors overseeing specific topic areas, such as Children, Youth & Families; Recovery Support Services; Forensic; Finance Policy; Housing; Legal; Medical Directors; and Older Persons. A notable recent development is the November 2025 announcement of a multistate pilot project to expand access to behavioral health services delivered by Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinics, a collaboration with the National Council for Mental Wellbeing. The organization maintains information at nasmhpd.org for its membership and activities.
