The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization focused on improving education by strengthening educator effectiveness and recognizing exemplary teaching. Founded in 1987 and based in Arlington, Virginia, it has defined a set of standards that describe what accomplished teaching looks like, created by teachers for teachers. Educators who pursue this standard through a voluntary process earn National Board Certification, which is described as the profession's highest credential for accomplished teaching, with research suggesting that students taught by Board-certified teachers make greater gains. 

Within the primary and secondary education landscape, the organization provides a framework for teacher development and a recognized certification that sits along a career continuum from pre-service preparation to teacher leadership. To date, more than 133,000 teachers have earned Board certification. A recent development is a partnership with the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education to offer ATLAS access at a reduced cost for new subscribers, expanding access to its resources.
