The National Space Society (NSS) is an independent, educational, grassroots, non-profit organization based in Orlando, Florida, dedicated to creating a spacefaring civilization, and it maintains a website at space.nss.org. It originated from the merger of the National Space Institute (founded 1974) and the L5 Society (founded 1975), which formed NSS in 1987. NSS is widely acknowledged as the preeminent citizen's voice on space, with thousands of members and more than 50 chapters in the United States and around the world. The organization conducts the annual International Space Development Conference, engages with Congress on space policy, and publishes Ad Astra magazine, an award-winning periodical. The organization has 51-200 employees.
