NAWCWD is an organization within the Naval Air Systems Command dedicated to maintaining a center of excellence in weapons development for the Department of the Navy. It operates mainly from two Southern California locations: China Lake and Point Mugu. At China Lake, it oversees more than 1.1 million acres of land ranges and multiple weapons development laboratories at Naval Air Weapons Station China Lake, about 150 miles north of Los Angeles; at Point Mugu, it operates the Point Mugu Sea Range—a 36,000 square mile instrumented sea and air space that includes San Nicolas Island—serving as the Navy's Electronic Warfare Technical Center and located about 60 miles west of Los Angeles. 

The division functions within the Department of the Navy to advance weapons development and electronic warfare capabilities for naval use. Based in California, it is a sizable organization that supports the Navy's broader defense technology needs through its specialized facilities and operations.
