New Amsterdam Market was an innovative and unprecedented public market specifically dedicated to incubating small businesses, supporting regional and sustainable agriculture and food production, and creating compelling civic space. Held from 2005 to 2014, New Amsterdam Market grew from a series of events and festivals into a weekly market followed by 20,000 supporters, attended regularly by 1,500 customers, and bringing New Yorkers and visitors from the region to the Old Fulton Fish Market in Lower Manhattan, a threatened public landmark and economic asset belonging to the people of New York. New Amsterdam Market worked with over 300 independent local businesses and fostered the development of several dozen entrepreneurial endeavors, and was named “Best Outdoor Market 2010” by New York magazine.
