The North Texas Municipal Water District is a regional utility that provides water, wastewater, and solid waste disposal services to more than two million residents across a 2,200-square-mile service area in north Texas. It is headquartered in Wylie, Texas, and traces its origins to 1946 when local leaders formed the Tri-County Reservoir Association to collaborate with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers on Lavon Lake; the Texas Legislature later authorized NTMWD in 1951 to develop, finance, construct, and operate facilities to meet future water needs. The district began wastewater treatment in the 1970s, expanded into solid waste disposal in the 1980s, and operates the largest man-made wetlands in the country as a water reuse project that polishes treated wastewater, supplements water supplies, and supports regional ecosystems. A recent development is a 2025 partnership with the City of Richardson to offer free residential sprinkler system evaluations.
