The Regional District of Nanaimo (RDN) is a regional government serving the central east coast of Vancouver Island. It covers seven Electoral Areas plus the City of Nanaimo, the District Municipality of Lantzville, the City of Parksville, and the Town of Qualicum Beach. The district provides regional services across its jurisdiction, including transit, recreation and parks, liquid and solid waste management, water supply, drinking water and watershed protection, and planning. It is based in Nanaimo, British Columbia. These arrangements are underpinned by ongoing regional planning and service initiatives. In 2026 the RDN announced plans to develop a Rural Housing Strategy to guide land use and policies in rural areas in response to housing affordability and changing needs, and it launched the Sort Smart Technical Assistance Program to help property owners and managers meet the requirements of the Mandatory Waste Source Separation bylaw.
